Theme 2: Stormwater Management

Introduction
Stormwater is a valuable resource, and its management should play a central role in any sustainable urban water management plan. Although there is increasing interest in the use of sustainable urban drainage systems (particularly in Northern European countries and the USA), little consideration has been paid to analysing the ability of these systems (either singly or in combination) to cope with extreme events or under changing socioeconomic conditions. In addition, the use of best management practices (BMPs)/sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) in Southern European and developing countries remains a relatively new area of research, where initial studies have suggested that the transfer of this technology is not necessarily a straightforward process, particularly with regard to the environmental impact and operation of these systems under different climatic and socio-economic conditions.
These reasons are the basis for including work packages on technological options for stormwater control under conditions of uncertainty, and environmental change studies for storm water control and reuse options, respectively (WP 2.1 and WP 2.3). A further key issue identified, and one that appears to be common to all countries, is the diversity of stakeholders in the urban environment involved, either directly or indirectly, in stormwater management. The concerns and priorities of these stakeholders need to be fully considered to enable the optimal stormwater strategy for a particularly city to be identified. It is with respect to these objectives that WP 2.2 (decision-making processes in integrated urban stormwater management) has been developed. This work package aims to evaluate different stormwater management strategies and decision making processes, highlighting existing problems and identifying opportunities, which will support sustainable development.
