Belo Horizonte – Brazil

Introduction
In Belo Horizonte, SWITCH focused on the development and uptake of more natural and environmentally sympathetic approaches to urban drainage to minimize flooding risks while also improving river corridor habitats. A partnership between the municipality and the University was at the heart of the project while learning alliances at the local level engaged schools and communities around several demonstration projects, and institutions such as other municipal departments, the utility and metropolitan and river basin committees at the city scale and beyond. Outcomes included commitment of the Municipal Parks Foundation to scaling up rainwater harvesting and participatory budgeting committees starting to implement alternative and more sustainable solutions as a result of the training and exposure received.
